"cobleymj" (cobleymj)

Stopped at a red light, guy pulls up behind me, stops, and then pulls forward into my bumper. I have dashcam to show I was stopped when he hit me (not a sudden stop). Trunk lid is bent up, small dent on the rear bumper cover (to the left of the little license plate, on the edge of where it recesses). Lots of scratches in the general area down past the primer) and the taillight is cracked.
Guy gives me his insurance and license details, admits fault, then says he'll pay for it. I ask him if we need to call the cops and he says no. How screwed am I?
It wasnt a huge shunt and I am fine. I know neck injuries etc can occur later but as someone who has almost broken his neck before, I get pain there pretty easily and right now I feel nothing.

Who else read this as "rear-engined 911"?

You're fine, just let his and your insurance know.

It's better to report the accident late than never, especially if you have video proof.

considering the damage is to your rear end, and you have his insurance info, id just call your insurance and let them know. they'll handle it from there.

If you traded info and nobody was hurt / vehicles weren't disabled, you are allowed to file a police report later. You're not required to sit around (at least not in my area. Local laws might be different, but that's how it's been everywhere I've lived).
The police report just serves as a record of who's at fault, so insurance doesn't have to fight it out. Worst case is when you report it to his insurance, he denies being at fault... But you've got a dash cam clearly showing you were stopped prior to the accident (i.e., didn't brake check him). That, and usually in a rear-end collision the back car is at fault.
Shouldn't have any problems.
That said, guy might have been on a suspended license or something if he was adamant about switching info and leaving before cops were called...

You should be fine. Call his insurance company ASAP and make a claim. They will call him to confirm the claim and that he was at fault. I can't see any problems arising.

If everybody involved was fine, you are probably good if you didn't call 911. If you start feeling something after everything is said and done your insurance company can probably sort something out if you give them a call, but the best case scenario is that you will be fine. You've got video proof, which is great and it sounds like both of the cars are operational. Good luck!

I was thinking, "What other kind of 911 would you get?"

My thoughts exactly coming from a family of law enforcement. Getting information is really the most important part.

Hell, when you call to report an accident, the first few things they ask about are injuries, and if vehicles are disabled. If nobody is hurt and the vehicles are able to move, they usually instruct you to clear the road (find a parking lot nearby or whatever) and wait for the cops...
...Usually if there's no injuries / no disabled vehicles, it gets pretty low priority as well, so the wait can sometimes be hours. The typical protocol here is to call the police department back, and ask about filing a police report later. It's actually pretty common.

Yup, some areas won't even send police unless the accident is expected to cost more than say $2000 on one or more cars, an injury or a car is disabled.
I know I was in an accident once, 4 cars. I got out, checked for injuries and called the cops and moved 10 feet into a parking lot. I watched every kick and scream that I was leaving. I explained that no injuries, we were just going to moved there anyway and waited for the cops. Sure enough, cops show up and 1) ask for injuries 2) move everyone right next to me.

Well where I live, no matter the situation, the person who rear ends your car is at fault. You could pull out in front of someone just enough that they don't hit the side of your car, and you are still at fault.

Ok, here's what I've done in the past. Call this guy tomorrow and confirm he is willing to pay for the damage out of his own pocket. Arrange to meet somewhere, if practical, and have him sign an agreement you've typed out that basically says Mr. So&So agrees to pay for all damages related to the car accident on 07/xx/2014. Make two copies of this letter. You and he need to sign both, so he has a copy and so do you. Go get some estimates on how much it will cost to get your car fixed. Pick the place that you feel will do the best job. Let the guy know where you are getting your car fixed, as well as how much it will be. When the job is done, inform him of this fact, and have him pay the bill. If he's a stand up guy, once he's paid up, you're good to go. If he's smart, he should have you sign a release form absolving him of any further payments. If he decides not to pay, take his ass to court. I'd also call your insurance company tomorrow as well, just to cover your butt if he suddenly develops amnesia and doesn't remember you at all.

A front-engined one.
